PROFESSIONAL TRAINING ON INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
On August 13, 2018, the Professional training course on “Decision Support Tools (DSTs) for Integrated Water Resources Management in the context of Climate Change” and “Sustainable Urban Drainage systems SUDs” was organized by VNU University of Science (HUS). The opening ceremony was attended by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Tien Giang, Vice Rector of VNU University of Science; Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Tam, representative of the project management team “Capacity Building Support” (FCB Project – Facility to Capacity Building) and more than 20 trainees from HUS.

To implement the agreement between HUS and FCB, under the supervision of the Belgian Development Agency (formerly BTC – now is Enabel) and Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), HUS had organized the first activity of sub – project named: “Capacity building for training and scientific research in water resources management in the context of urbanization and climate change at VNU University of Science, VNU-Hanoi” with 2 training courses delivered by Prof Patrick Willems, Director of the Arenberg Doctoral School for Science, Engineering and Technology, Head of Hydraulic Section KU Leuven, one of the top 50 universities in the world. Theses courses aim to:
– To strengthen the understanding on sustainable urban drainage systems and integrated water management in the context of climate change for lecturers and researchers of HUS;
– To equip a strong and adequate knowledge and professional skills in IWRM, in particular the SUDs and the DSTs for IWRM in the context of CC which help lecturers and researchers of HUS being able to understand thoroughly these concepts and tools in order to apply smoothly them in future tasks both in technical and management aspects.

The Facility to Capacity Building project (FCB) is a part of the Vietnam – Belgium 2011-2015 Indicative Cooperation Program. The project is jointly implemented by Enabel and MOET.
The General objective of FCB is to contribute to the sustainable development and growth of Vietnam by facilitating Vietnam to become a knowledge-based industrialized country by 2020. The Specific objective of FCB is to improve the quality of human resources of Vietnam through strengthening the innovative and the management skills and capacities of Vietnamese individuals and targeted institutions.
FCB will offer a diversified range of instruments to address the demands for human resource development of Vietnam, including master degree scholarships, short-term traineeships, alumni fellowships, pre-departure facilitation, net- working and professional development activities, all will be geared at creating some of the conditions for successful organizational and institutional strengthening. The capacity building opportunities on offer will be coherent with the priorities of the ICP area of intervention and maximize opportunities to develop linkages between Vietnamese and Belgian actors.
Considering that the VNU University of Science (HUS), Vietnam National University (VNU), Hanoi is the public entity officially in charge of training human resources, nurturing talents, conducting scientific research and knowledge transfer in natural science field, to contribute to the socio-economic growth of the nation, therefore HUS has been selected as a beneficiary of the FCB project by giving a grant to develop highly-qualified staffs to meet the requirements of international integration and to facilitate the VNU University of Science reaching the advanced level in the Asia region in the field of water resources management.
There are several sub-objectives of the grant, are to strengthen the professional capacity of the lecturers and researchers of HUS, especially (i) for the development of curriculum and course’s syllabuses for the water resources management subjects; and (ii) teaching skills in international joint-education program; to improve the capacities in scientific writing, presentation in English at conferences/workshops; as well as to enhance the capacity of management of programs/projects according to international standards for managers of HUS.
The assignment under this grant includes 7 short training courses:
– 2 training courses on Integrated Water Resources Management with (i) Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDs) and Tools for IWRM in the context of Climate
– 1 course for English in giving academic lectures
– 1 course for developing programs/syllabuses in line with international standard programs
– 1 course for Skills in writing scientific paper and presentation in English at international conferences and workshops for junior researchers/lecturers
– 1 course for Education program management and quality assurance skills;
– 1 course for Project management, monitoring and evaluation skills (including scientific research project).
